Lucknow: BJP on Wednesday expelled 12 party rebels who had contested urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh against official candidates, taking the number of those against whom such action has been taken to 66.

"State President Laxmi Kant Bajpai has expelled 12 leaders and workers, including some district presidents, who contested local body elections against official candidates," BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said.

He said those expelled belonged to Varanasi, Ghazipur, Jalaun, Kheri and Prabuddha Nagar districts.

The party earlier expelled 54 workers, who had contested against official candidates in the ongoing urban local body elections.

Bajpai has directed regional coordinators to identify such party workers and leaders and send the list to senior leadership for disciplinary action.
