Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to kin of a journalist, who died after being seriously injured during an attack on cabinet minister Nand Kumar Gupta "Nandi" in Allahabad.

Vijay Pratap Singh, the 36-year-old senior correspondent with the Indian Express, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Delhi yesterday. Singh was seriously injured during the attack on Gupta in Allahabad on July 12.

"The CM has announced a financial assistance of Rs five lakh to family members of Vijay Pratap Singh who died during treatment in Delhi yesterday," an official spokesman said here.

Initially, he was admitted to a private hospital in Allahabad and was later shifted to Army hospital at New Delhi. The blast outside Gupta's house killed one man and injured seven persons, including the minister and the journalist.

Police had arrested two associates of a jailed local Samajwadi Party leader for their alleged involvement in the bomb attack.
