UP govt raises compensation for those killed in animal attack

The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the ex-gratia amount to Rs one lakh for the family of those killed by wild animals in the state, a senior forest department official said Monday.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the ex-gratia amount to Rs one lakh for the family of those killed by wild animals in the state, a senior forest department official said Monday.

"The state government has increased the compensation on loss of life by wild animals to rupees one lakh from Rs 50,000 prevalent till now," deputy chief wildlife warden PK Gupta said.

An order issued by the state government in 1996 has beenrevised and the fresh order sent to all the district magistrates.
Rs one lakh would be paid as compensation if a person killed is an adult. In case of a minor, the amount has been increased to Rs 50,000 from existing Rs 25,000, Gupta said.

However, there were certain conditions and compensation would be awarded only after fulfilling them, he added.

The fresh order would also cover loss of cattle and crop.
"For instance, earlier compensation was paid only if crop was damaged by elephants. Now, farmers whose crop was destroyed by rhinos will also be eligible for compensation," Gupta said.
