UP Govt should take Meerut gang rape incident seriously: Mamta Sharma

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma said on Tuesday that the Meerut gang rape incident should be taken seriously by the Uttar Pradesh Government.

New Delhi: National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma said on Tuesday that the Meerut gang rape incident should be taken seriously by the Uttar Pradesh Government.

Sharma said, "Honestly, people are tired listening to the talks of Uttar Pradesh. But I am concerned that the government is not ready to do anything for women in Uttar Pradesh. Just making strategies will not help. The government should take care of women safety separately."

Talking about the recent Meerut incident, she said, "It has come up as a new thing now, that gang rape takes place for religion conversion. So that out of fear the girl agrees to convert. The government should take up these matters very seriously."

"I would also like to say that people are looking forward at the central government`s face because they have made such high promises. If the government of Uttar Pradesh is not able to work out properly, then they should take it up themselves and look into the matter, the condition of women," she added.

Suggesting about handing over the case to CBI, Mamta Sharma said, "The incident of religion conversion that has been tied up with the gang rape needs to be taken up the CBI. So that the truth comes out and no such incident takes place in future. The police and government must hand over such cases to the CBI."

The 20-year-old teacher of Hindi and English in the Sarawa village madrasa in Kharkhauda claimed that she was gang-raped and later forced to adopt the religion of a particular community and to change her name.

Reportedly, the woman managed to escape from the kidnappers on August 2. Afterwards, she contacted her family who rescued her. A complaint was also filed later with the police.
