Lucknow: In an apparent attempt to appease
Muslim voters ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls early
next year, the state government on Thursday accorded minister of
state status to the chairmen of Shia and Sunni Waqf Boards.
Chairman Shia Waqf Board Sayed Wasim Rizvi and Chairman
Sunni Waqf Board Zufar Ahmad Farooqui have been given the
status of minister of state, Principal Secretary, Minority
Welfare B M Meena, said.
The attempt is seen as an attempt to woo the Muslims
voters ahead of 2012 polls.
The decision comes close on the heels of Chief Minister
Mayawati writing a letter to the Prime Minister seeking quota
for minority community in government jobs.
