Allahabad: The total revenue receipts of Uttar Pradesh have risen substantially even though the state government’s contribution continues to be much lower than receipts from the Centre, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has said.
In its report for the year 2008-09, the CAG stated that the state’s total revenue receipts stood at Rs 77,830.73 crore, up from Rs 68,672.47 crore in the previous year.
However, a break-up of the revenue receipts showed that the revenue generated by the state government stood at only Rs 34,425.52 crore, against receipts from the Centre to the tune of Rs 42,405.21 crore, the report said.
Receipts from the Centre comprised Rs 30,905.72 crore by way of the state’s share of divisible Union taxes and Rs 11,499.49 crore in grants-in-aid.
In terms of percentage, the state government contributed 46 per cent of the total revenue receipts, compared to 54 per cent by the Centre, the report said.
This was despite the fact that the state government’s share in revenue receipts has risen by 1 per cent compared to the last financial year, when it stood at a mere 45 per cent,
the CAG said.
The report added that in the year 2008-09, the state’s tax revenue stood at 28,658.97 crore, which was 14.82 per cent more than the previous year’s figure.
On the other hand, the state’s non-tax revenue stood at Rs 6,766.55 crore, recording a rise of 16.34 per cent from the previous financial year, the CAG said.
The report also pointed towards a staggering loss of revenue resulting from under-assessments, which could have been responsible for the state’s poor performance in terms of revenue generation.

and forest and entertainment tax, revealed under assessments/short levy/loss of revenue amounting to Rs 1,156.87 crore in 3,272 cases," the report said.
