Wall caves in, one dies at state capital

A labourer was killed and five were injured here today when the wall of an under-construction building collapsed and the Opposition alleged the incident happened at the residence of Chief Minister Mayawati.

Lucknow: A labourer was killed and five
were injured here today when the wall of an under-construction
building collapsed and the Opposition alleged the incident
happened at the residence of Chief Minister Mayawati.

Police, however, disputed it and said the cave in took
place on Joppling Road in posh Hazratganj area.

The Opposition alleged the incident occurred at one
of the memorial sites for Dalit icons and the work was being
carried out in violation of the court order.

Police said the wall of an under-construction building
collapsed burying six labourers, adding one of them was killed
while five were rescued.

"The incident occurred at Mall Avenue residence of the
Chief Minister where illegal excavation was being carried out.
An effort is being made to create an impression that it took
place somewhere else," SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said.

Alleging the construction work was being carried out
in violation of the court order, the SP demanded a judicial
probe into the incident.

"The government is openly violating the court order,"
Congress spokesman Subodh Srivastava said.

He demanded Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia for the bereaved
family and Rs two lakh each for the injured.
