Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday
directed Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that polluted
water discharged from tanneries in Kanpur did not flow into
the river Ganges even after being treated at sewage treatment
plants.
A Division Bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and
Justice Arun Tandon passed the order while taking a serious
note of a report submitted by IIT-Kanpur which had stated that
water discharged from the tanneries had an alarmingly high
concentration of chromium even after it got treated.
Passing the order, while hearing a PIL on pollution in
the Ganges, the court asked the state government to chalk out
a plan for using water discharged from tanneries and later
treated at sewage treatment plants for irrigation.
Fixing January 4, 2011, as the next date of hearing in
the matter, the court asked the state government to file an
affidavit in this regard and directed the state pollution
control board to file its report on the quality of treated
water at Kanpur.
