Dehradun: The Geological Survey of India Thursday suggested construction of a new township near Kedarnath after demolishing the ruins of the old one close to the Himalayan shrine.

The GSI submitted a report to the state government in this regard giving a detailed map for constructing a new Kedarpuri which was witness to massive destruction of life and property during the 2013 calamity, an official release here said.

Submitted by GSI Deputy Director General T S Pangti to Chief Sectetary Subhash Kumar, the report suggests not to disturb the huge boulder which came rolling down from nowhere on the fateful day and stopped just a couple of metres short of the rear portion of the temple as if to protect it from being directly hit by the deluge.

The GSI has also recommended measures to further strengthen the boulder where it stands today so that it functions even in the future as a protective wall against natural calamities.

The report suggests erecting a new township near the temple after demolishing the dilapidated structures which formed part of the old township known as Kedarpuri.

It has also suggested measures to stop erosion along Mandakini`s left flank which may pose some danger besides creation of enough water outlets an construction of pre-fabricated residences for priests on the slopes in front of the shrine.

The report is based on the recommendations of the task force constituted by the GSI to study reconstruction around the famous Himalayan shrine.
