NSUI leader immolation case: ND Tiwari demands action

Congress veteran and former Uttarakhand chief minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari on Wednesday demanded action against those responsible for circumstances which led to the alleged self-immolation by a young NSUI leader at Ramnagar in Nainital district saying the attitude of neglect on part of the authorities was unpardonable.

Dehradun: Congress veteran and former Uttarakhand chief minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari on Wednesday demanded action against those responsible for circumstances which led to the alleged self-immolation by a young NSUI leader at Ramnagar in Nainital district saying the attitude of neglect on part of the authorities was unpardonable.

Expressing grief at the death of NSUI leader Rohit Pandey during treatment at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital yesterday, Tiwari said, "It is surprising how authorities did not take cognisance of this unfortunate incident. This attitude of neglect is unpardonable. Those responsible must be brought to book."

He also appealed to all sections of society and student organisations to help maintain peace in the state.

Pandey had sustained severe burn injuries when he allegedly immolated himself on November 4 at Ramnagar in protest against booking of some NSUI leaders by police in a case of arson.

He was demanding immediate transfer of a police SHO whom he accused of lodging a false case against five Union activists for torching three bikes parked outside ABVP office at Maldhan in the district during student union polls there recently.

However, when his demand was not conceded, he allegedly immolated himself and died after nearly a week-long treatment in Delhi.

A CB-CID probe has already been ordered into the immolation incident by Chief Minister Harish Rawat.
