Dehradun: Opposition BJP on Monday created a ruckus in Uttarakhand Assembly demanding an immediate discussion in the House on the "deteriorating" law and order scenario in the state, prompting the Speaker to briefly adjourn the proceedings.

As soon as the zero hour began on the fourth day of the ongoing Budget session of the state assembly, the BJP members led by Leader of Opposition Ajay Bhatt rose to their feet, insisting on an immediate debate in the House on the issue of law and order which they alleged the state government had failed to tackle.

Referring to an incident in Kumaon region in which a Gram Pradhan was assaulted with a knife, the Opposition members accused the state government of failing to rein in criminal elements who, they claimed, were roaming around freely in the state.

Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal refused to grant permission for a debate on the law and order situation in general but asked the Opposition to give a notice if it was keen on a discussion on a particular incident on the floor of the House.

This led to noisy scenes in the Assembly with the Chair not permitting a debate and the Opposition insisting on its demand.

When Speaker Kunjwal's repeated appeals for calm were ignored by Opposition members, he was forced to adjourn the proceedings of the House till 2 PM.
