Dehradun: A 12-year-old school boy was killed on Saturday when an object that he picked up from a garbage heap exploded in Roorkee town of Haridwar district.
Chief Minister Harish Rawat has described the incident as "unfortunate" and said that the police should be given more time to investigate the matter.
"One possibility is that the explosive was part of scrap from the army base at Chandmari which found its way to the garbage heap along the roadside.
"Whatever the possibilities, it is an unfortunate incident. I think police should be given some more time to investigate the matter," Rawat told reporters here.
The blast took place about 100 metres away from the venue of a VHP conference in Gangnahar police station area at about 12 PM, SHO D K Sharma said.
SSP Haridwar CP Agarwal said,"At present, we don't see any conspiracy angle in the blast."
"The VHP rally venue was significantly away from the place where explosion took place," he said.
A high alert has been sounded in Haridwar, he said.
Though the exact cause of the blast is still being ascertained prima facie it seems to have occurred when an object picked up by a boy from a garbage heap along the roadside went off, SHO said.
The boy was returning along with two of his friends from Government Inter College when he picked up the object from the garbage heap and began playing with it while his friends went ahead.
Moments after that the object went off leaving the boy badly injured, ADG (law and order) Ram Singh Meena said.
The boy died on the spot.
Senior police officials from Haridwar including SSP Sweety Aggrawal have rushed to the spot along with a bomb disposal squad to find out what sort of an explosive device it was whether a firecracker or a bomb, he said.
DGP B S Sidhu in Dehradun said?the explosion was minor.
"The explosion was minor. The boy died as he had sustained head injuries," the DGP told reporters here.
Though investigations are on it seems the boy picked up something from a garbage heap along the roadside and began playing with it while his two friends went ahead.
Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand Assembly BJP's Ajay Bhatt alleged the blast was part of a premeditated conspiracy to disrupt the VHP's programme.
