Dehradun: Snowfall in the higher reaches coupled with sporadic rain in low lying areas of Uttarakhand brought down temperatures in the state intensifying the cold conditions here, according to the MeT office.
The mountain peaks in the Garhwal Himalayas including Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Hemkund Sahib, Chakrata, Auli, Munsiyari and Dharchula peaks in Kumaun region, have been covered with snow, MeT Director Anand Sharma said.
Snowfall was also reported in the tourist city of Nainital that started late last evening and continued till this morning, he said, adding that major roads at the higher areas of Chamoli district have been closed down.
The Karnaprayag-Bageshwar main road which connects Garhwal to Kumaun has also come to a halt due to heavy snowfall while Karnaprayag-Ranikhet-Pithoragarh national highway near Gairsain village is closed, the MeT official said.
Many other routes have also been closed down due to heavy snowfall, he said.
Meanwhile, the MeT official informed that the weather is expected to improve with a clear sky tomorrow.
