Snowfall in U`khand before schedule, rains kill 5 in UP

New Delhi: Higher reaches in Uttarakhand witnessed snowfall, ushering in a chilly weather, even as rains claimed five more lives in Uttar Pradesh where flood situation continued to remain grim in several districts on Wednesday.

Nearly a month ahead of schedule, the higher reaches of Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand received snowfall, sending the mercury plummeting in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts.

The hills around Badrinath and Kedarnath temples have received snowfall while lower areas received rainfall forcing the people to take out their woollens.

Rains claimed five more lives in Uttar Pradesh where the flood situation continued in several districts due to rise in water level of major rivers.

Two women and three children were killed when wall of their house collapsed over them due to heavy rains in Chandausi town of Moradabad district.

Ramganga was flowing at the danger mark at Dabri in Shahjahanpur, whereas Yamuna was above danger mark in Mathura and was rising at Agra, Etawah, Auraiyya, Kalpi and Hamirpur.

Sharda continued to flow above the danger level at Pallia Kalan and Sharda Nagar areas in Kheri district.

Ghaghara was above danger mark at Elgin Bridge in Barabanki, Ayodhya and Turtipar in Ballia.

Light rains occurred at a few places in Rajasthan with Jaisalmer recording maximum rainfall of 13.6 mm.

Widespread rainfall occurred in Jaipur, Bharatpur, Ajmer divisions, scattered in Kota, Udaipur, Jodhpur divisions and isolated in Bikaner divisions.
