Kolkata: West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan who had said that goondaism was going on in the state on Friday said that there was no conflict of interest between elected members of the government and him.

"I said what I said as the Governor. So, there is no conflict of interest and I am not aspiring to be an elected member," Narayanan told reporters here.

On Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee's statement that watch was being kept on the Governor, Narayanan quipped "I am glad that I am safe."

Asked about political violence in the state, he said "the government is fully aware of what needs to be done."

In a virtual indictment of the state government, Narayanan had said on Wednesday that 'goondaism' was taking place in the state and that the police should act impartially.

Reacting to this, Mukherjee had yesterday said that this was not expected of a constitutional head and it would act as instigation.
