TC flays Yechury's remark on Mamata

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Saturday criticised CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury for dubbing its chief Mamata Banerjee's decision not to contest the assembly polls as her "weakness", saying the comment was made out of frustration and showed that the Left Front was getting "panicky".

"It is ridiculous that a man who has never participated in a direct election but always acted from outside is making such comment," Trinamool Congress vice-president Subrata Mukherjee told reporters here.

Mukherjee said Banerjee had taken the decision not to contest the election to devote maximum time for campaigning for the party.

Banerjee had already said "she would lead the government from the very first day when the Ma-Mati-Manush (Trinamool slogan) government would be in office in West Bengal after the polls," he said.

"Mamata's decision not to contest the polls has created panic in CPI(M) as more she will campaign, the more it will bring disaster to the Marxists in Bengal," Mukherjee said.

"There is a constitutional provision for one to be elected within six months of government formation," the senior Trinamool leader said.

The decision of Mamata Banerjee not to contest the West Bengal assembly polls now reflected her "weakness", Yechury said in Delhi earlier in the day.
