12 `Maoists` acquitted in West Bengal

A Nadia district court on Thursday acquitted Ashok (alias Chandi) Sarkar, stated to be a Maoist leader, and 11 others for lack of evidence.

on Thursday acquitted Ashok (alias Chandi) Sarkar, stated to be a
Maoist leader, and 11 others for lack of evidence.
Sessions judge Sambhunath Chatterjee acquitted the 12
persons who had been arrested in October 2005 from different
parts of the district for Maoist links and slapped with
sedition and other charges including under the Arms Act.

While five of them would be released tomorrow, the rest
would have to remain behind the bars as there were other cases
pending against them.
One of the 12, Bikash Saha had obtained bail from the
High Court.

Saha, a Congress Councillor of Shantipur Municipality,
alleged they had been framed by the police in false cases at
the behest of CPI(M).
