14-day custody to 43 accused in Sankrail police attack case

Jhargram (WB): A local court n Friday ordered
14 days judicial remand to 43 men, arrested in connection with
the attack on security personnel at Sankrail in West Midnapore
district.

The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate
remanded the 43 persons to judicial custody till November 18
but acquitted 19 others, all women.
The 43 arrested were charged with attempt to kill
security personnel, resisting security action and keeping
unlicensed arms.

All the accused were residents of Chunapara under
Sankrail police station in the district where a clash between
police and villagers took place yesterday morning.

The security forces continued to patrol Chunapara as
the area wore a deserted look a day after the clash when
security personnel opened fire to repulse an armed mob,
belonging to the Maoist-backed People`s Committee against
Police Atrocities (PCPA).

In retaliatory firing by the mob, the
Officer-in-charge of Sankrail police station Uttam Debnath
along with two others were seriously injured.
Police sources said while Debnath has been shifted to
S S K M Hospital, Kolkata, the other two injured policemen
were being treated at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital.

Police later recovered the body of a man with bullet
wounds and Trinamool Congress claimed he belonged to the
party.
