Kolkata: West Bengal legislators will now be
entitled to a grant of Rs 50,000 for travel by rail or air
anywhere in India accompanied by not more than two companions
annually, while the pension of former MLAs has been doubled
from the current allowance of Rs 4,000 per month.
Earlier the MLAs used the get a grant of Rs 30,000 for
travel by rail or air.
The amounts were raised after passage of the Member`s
Emoluments (Amendment) Bill, 2010, and Members Pension
(Amendment) Bill, 2010 by voice vote in the Assembly in the
absence of Trinamool Congress legislators.
The bill relating to pension proposed to enhance the
maximum pension payable to former MLAs to Rs 12,000.
The Left Front and Congress members supported the bills
with some members saying that salaries and the emoluments of
MLAs in the state were far less than that drawn by their
counterparts in other states and needed to be raised.
CLP chief whip Asit Mal said the air and travel allowance
should be raised to Rs one lakh instead of Rs 50,000.
The salary of legislators was raised from Rs 3,000 a
month to Rs 5,000 from December 1, last year.
