AMRI will treat volunteers affected in rescue work

As the death toll in the AMRI Hospital fire climbed, authorities at the institution said it would take responsibility for treatment of volunteers.

Kolkata: As the death toll in the AMRI
Hospital fire climbed, authorities at the institution
here today said it would take responsibility for treatment of
volunteers who fell ill during rescue operations.

The hospital authorities had faced criticism from many
quarters for their silence on the demand for treatment of the
volunteers who risked their lives to save others and not
cooperating with them during the evacuation.

"Some volunteers were in need of medical attention. While
some of them have been treated immediately, we believe there
are others who may be in need of medical attention. We are
requesting them to come to AMRI Dhakuria so that medical
support can be administered at the earliest. AMRI will take
responsibility of all such treatment," an unsigned statement
on behalf of the hospital, said.

While condoling the deaths, it thanked "members of the
neighbouring locality" and family members of the patients
for helping in the evacuation, saying "they had shown
tremendous courage and camaraderie, risking their lives to
save patients".
