Kolkata: CPI(M) MLA Anisur Rahman came under the scanner of West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) as he faced more flak on Friday for his derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the context of the state government`s monetary compensation to rape victims.
After being censured by his party, Rahman earned the ire of senior party colleague Brinda Karat who described as "atrocious and completely unacceptable" his remarks made in the context of West Bengal government`s monetary compensation to rape victims.
The BJP asked the Left leadership to explain the "unacceptable" conduct of Rahman, who is deputy leader of the CPI(M) in the state Assembly.
The WBHRC took cognisance of Rahman`s remarks and directed the Director General of Police to file a report within three weeks.
"We have taken cognisance and issued notice with regard to the comments made by Anisur Rahman at Itahar," WBHRC chairman Justice (retd) Ashok Ganguly said here.
"We have asked the DGP to inquire and submit a report within three weeks. He has been directed to collect CDs and other relevant material," Justice Ganguly said.
Rahman, a minister in the previous Left Front government, had made the remarks against Banerjee during a political rally at Itahar in North Dinajpur district on Wednesday.
While Rahman, who is the deputy leader of CPI(M) in the Assembly, apologised for his comments at a hurriedly- called press conference at the CPI(M) state headquarters yesterday and read out a written statement, party state secretary Biman Bose said his party did not approve of such comments.
"In politics, there is legitimate criticism against an opponent if you are using political language, but this type of language against a woman leader is totally unacceptable," Karat said.
Karat said CPI-M has strongly opposed such a statement and has made a public censure of Rahman and there is no room for such statements in the future.
BJP national spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad told reporters in Patna that Rahman`s remarks against the Trinamool Congress leader is insensitive and absolutely unacceptable.
Describing Rahman`s utterances as "unpardonable", he said, "The CPI(M) top guns like Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury should come forward and explain the party`s stand on the remarks made by their colleague against Mamata and crack the whip against him."
