Kolkata: Hours after a woman died giving birth to twin babies on road on being refused admission to two state-run hospitals, a 2-day-old child went missing on Friday from another government hospital in the city.

Authorities at the state-run Chittaranjan Hospital admitted the child was missing from the mother's cot in the maternity ward this afternoon.

The authorities accepted the complaint lodged by the husband of Tanija Fatima who alleged the boy child, born on Wednesday in the ward, went missing while she was asleep. The hospital authorities said CCTV footage showed a woman suspect loitering near the ward gate whom the police were looking for.

"The police were verifying the CCTV footage and interrogated the nurses and ward staff on duty. The security in the hospital has been tightened," the official said.

Earlier, a 40-year-old woman gave birth to the twins on the roadside near Maidan in the city late last night after her husband took her first to Chittaranjan Sevasadan which refused to admit her and later to Sambhunath Pandit Hospital that also turned her away.

She died on the road after giving birth to her second child.
