Bengal nun gang-rape: Congress cautions Mamata, asks her to be 'serious, strict'

Congress on Saturday cautioned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over increasing rape incidents in the state during her tenure and asked her to be more 'serious and strict'.

New Delhi: Congress on Saturday cautioned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over increasing rape incidents in the state during her tenure and asked her to be more 'serious and strict'.

“It's increasing in the tenure of Mamata Banerjee ji, she should deal with it on a serious & strict basis,” Congress general secretary in charge of West Bengal Shakeel Ahmad told reporters here.

Senior party leader Manish Tewari also condemned the rape incident and asked the state government to take speedy action. "They must walk the extra mile to see that the perpetrators of crime are brought to justice," he said.

Congress' reaction came in the backdrop of an unfortunate rape incident which took place in the state today.

Earlier in the day, a 72-year-old nun was allegedly gang-raped at a convent school in Ranaghat area of West Bengal's Nadia district.

According to reports, around a dozen dacoits entered the Convent of Jesus and Mary and gang-raped the elderly nun.

However, taking a swift action over the mater, Mamata Banerjee ordered a CID investigation into the matter and said that 'strongest action will be taken' against the culprits.

"We strongly condemn the incident that took place at the Ranaghat Convent.... We have ordered a CID probe for the Ranaghat Convent incident. The Govt will take strict steps against the culprits," Banerjee said on All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) twitter handle.

Meanwhile, the victim has been admitted to a city hospital for treatment.
