Kolkata: The Election Commission Saturday took suo moto cognisance of an "altercation and scuffle" between BJP and Trinamool workers outside an election booth in Chowringhee assembly constituency during the bypoll in West Bengal.

Voting is going on for byelection in two assembly constituencies of Chowringhee in Kolkata and Basirhat (south) in North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal.

"Based on media reports (TV news), we have taken suo moto cognisance of the scuffle. We saw an altercation between the BJP and Trinamool Congress workers," Amit Ray Chaudhury, officer on special duty in the chief electoral office here, told IANS.

"We have asked the district election officer to attend to the situation and send forces there and submit a report to the Election Commission by today (Saturday) evening," Ray said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that "bogus voting" was going on in a booth in Chowringhee constituency's ward number 47 and after this was pointed out, the Trinamool supporters attacked the BJP workers. A scuffle ensued.

The BJP has also questioned presence of Trinamool councillor Santanu Sen in another ward. It has also alleged that the Trinamool is trying to foment trouble through anti-social elements in Ganesh Chandra Avenue.
