Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed that work on the East-West Metro Railway connecting Salt Lake to Howrah Maidan across the Ganga be expedited by the contractors and asked it to commence construction as soon as possible.
Justice Nadira Patherya directed that the project, construction of which stalled owing to a tussle between contractor AFCON and Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation, be given utmost importance and completed within reasonable time.
The court directed that KMRC would release funds to AFCON after the recommencement of work on the project, which would be from the Howrah Maidan side.
It also directed KMRC to issue a fresh contract letter to the company as the earlier contract had been cancelled by KMRC, challenging which AFCON had moved the court.
Justice Patherya also directed the West Bengal government to provide all assistance to ensure smooth work for the construction of the new Metro railway tracks.
Construction for the rapid transit system covering 14.67 kilometres from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan commenced in 2009.
