CPI(M) on Monday demanded a statement from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying it was an attempt by her to save her party from the clutches of CBI in Saradha scam.

Kolkata: CPI(M) on Monday demanded a statement from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying it was an attempt by her to save her party from the clutches of CBI in Saradha scam.

"If the meeting between Modi and Banerjee was for the sake of the state, then why didn't she go in the NITI Ayog meeting? If it was a meeting to seek financial waiver then why didn't she meet Modi and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley before the budget?

"The meeting is something more than what meets the eye," CPI(M) leader Mohammed Salim told reporters.

He further added that Banerjee had gone for the meeting to save her party at a time when TMC leaders and ministers of state government were being arrested in the Saradha scam.

"We think both the PMO and the Chief Minister's office should come out with a statement regarding the meeting," Salim said.
