Kolkata: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Saturday said that the Commonwealth Games controversy had tarnished the image of the nation and wrong publicity was being given about India`s ability to host the event.
"What is the image of the country before the whole world on Saturday because of the so-called allegations regarding the Commonwealth Games? The way the publicity being given, the country`s reputation is at stake," Chatterjee said here.
Stating that those responsible for it should be punished, he said, "but are we paying proper respect to our nation? Are we concerned about our nation that on Saturday we are looked upon as a country which cannot organise games and cannot look after its interests?"
He said that this was prompting athletes from abroad not to come to the country. Chatterjee was speaking to reporters after delivering a speech on `The role of Parliamentary Democracy and the Judiciary` here.=
