Desperate to take son to doctor, father removes rail blockade

Kolkata: A father taking his sick child to a
doctor in the metropolis took it upon himself to remove a
blockade on a railway line single-handedly so that the train
he was in could resume its journey.

When the father, Shyamal Ghosh, found that the EMU train
is stalled for over two hours at Bamungachi railway station in
North 24 Parganas district, about 35 km from here yesterday,
he first pleaded with the protestors who had put up a blockade
demanding arrest of some criminals in the area.
But when his plea fell on deaf ears, he placed his
three-year-old son on his shoulders and began removing the
obstructions himself.

"Nobody paid any heed to my appeals as I requested the
picketers with folded hands not to stall the train as I was
taking my son to a doctor in Kolkata," he said.

As passengers watched, he removed the bamboo poles from
the track.

As soon as the track was cleared of obstruction, he
shouted at the engine driver to start the train, which soon
began moving.
"I understand how painful it is to be detained in a
stalled train due to rail blockades which are launched on
issues not related to trains and I was determined to foil the
blockade," Ghosh said.

The protestors, who were apparently taken aback and did
not react at first, later raided the station master`s room and
heckled him for allowing the train to go.
