Bankura (WB): A doctor was on Sunday detained in connection with the unnatural death of a mentally retarded woman at a private home in Hooghly district.
Dr Kanchan Mondal was picked up by a Hooghly police team from his residence in Patrasayar area of Bankura on charge of issuing `wrong` death certificate in connection with the death of 32-year-old deaf and dumb woman Guriya, Superintendent of Police (Bankura) Mukesh Kumar said.
Mondal, who was the medical officer of Sonamukhi, was taken to Hooghly for interrogation.
The detained doctor, however, denied having issued the death certificate and claimed he was being framed.
Altogether 10 persons have been arrested in connection with the unnatural death on July 1 of the inmate of the Rehabilitation Centre for Mentally Ill Persons (Women) run by NGO Dulal Smriti Samsad till now, Hooghly police sources said.
The main suspect, Shyamal Ghosh, a resident of Uttarpara near Khajurdaho, is still absconding.
The police said two elder brothers of Ghosh were interrogated at the police station to trace the absconder`s whereabouts.
The CID has taken over the case of the mysterious death of Guriya at the destitute women`s home.
The licence of the home was cancelled with retrospective effect from April 1, after it was found that it had expired on March 31.
The authorities of the home had earlier claimed that Guria had died when a ceiling fan fell over her head and buried the body after duly obtaining a death certificate. The body was exhumed after villagers alleged foul play.
