Kolkata: On the eve of the Trinamool Congress government's move to revive the West Bengal Legislative Council, party ally SUCI (Communist) on Monday said it would be wasteful expenditure and urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to go ahead with it.

A three-member delegation, led by party state secretary Soumen Basu submitted a memorandum to Banerjee which dubbed the proposed move as "absolutely unnecessary" entailing wasteful expenditure.

"When you have already admitted that the state is in deep financial crisis, there is no need to revive the legislative council in the state," Basu said.

The delegation pointed out that of the 28 states, legislative councils existed in six -- UP, AP, Bihar, J&K, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The memorandum pointed out that the United Front government had abolished the legislative council in 1969 with the Congress extending support while the Trinamool Congress when in the opposition had not raised the issue.

The state government will move a resolution in the Assembly tomorrow under Article 169 of the Constitution for creation of a Legislative Council in the state.
