Elephant strikes fear among people in Hamidpur Island

Panic struck the inhabitants of Hamidpur island when an elephant appeared from the surrounding water and was roaming in the area, police said.

Malda: Panic struck the inhabitants of
Hamidpur island, recently surfaced in the river Ganga, when an
elephant appeared from the surrounding water and was roaming
in the area on Thursday, police said.

The full-grown elephant was believed to have come from
the Dalma forest in adjacent Jharkhand and moving around the
residential area causing panic among the people, mostly poor
farmers and fishermen who had settled there after migrating
from Malda district, police said.

Forest officials have been informed to remove the
elephant from the island.
