Five more arrested for student`s murder in West Bengal

Five more persons were arrested today for the gruesome murder of a college student in North 24 Parganas district though the main accused was still absconding.

Among the five was Polly Maity, the sister of main accused Shyamal Karmakar, Additional Superintendent of Police Bhaskar Mukherjee said.

She was arrested for giving shelter to the accused, he said.

The others arrested were Uttam Sikari, Sumar Sarkar, Ratan Sammadar and Tapas Biswas, he said.

During interrogation, he said, the arrested persons revealed that they kidnapped the student Sourav Chowdhury from near his home and strangled him before hitting him on the head with a heavy object on July 5.
The body was then thrown between Duttapukur and Bamangachi railway stations.

Sourav was killed for starting a drive against hooch dens in the area allegedly run by Karmakar.
The ASP hoped that the main accused would be arrested very soon.
