Former CPI(M) MLA assaulted

Former CPI(M) MLA of Arambagh Benoy Dutta was kidnapped and beaten up allegedly by Trinamool Congress-aided goons in the Hooghly district of the state.

Khanakul: Former CPI(M) MLA of Arambagh Benoy Dutta was kidnapped and beaten up allegedly by Trinamool Congress-aided goons in the Hooghly district of the state.

Dutta had gone to the Balpai village to attend a meeting of the party`s youth front and while returning to Khanakul, he was abducted, district CPI(M) leadership claimed.

"It was only after the intervention of the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra, who had called by the state Chief Secretary and home secretary, that Dutta was traced near a field close to Balpai village, seriously wounded. He was mercilessly beaten up," former state minister and CPI(M) Hooghly district secretory Sudarshan Roychowdhry said.

District Trinamool Congress president Tapan Dasgupta, however, denied the party`s involvement in the case, but said a scuffle had taken place in Balpai while Dutta was addressing a gathering.

"This is the same person who had prevented Mamata Banerjee from entering the district when the Left Front was in power. Even today he was trying to raise tempers by his speech, which might have prompted some local residents to intervene. From the reports, which we have got so far, a minor scuffle happened there. But, that had no connection to Dutta`s injuries," Dasgupta said.

Dutta was first rushed to a health centre in Khanakul and was later on shifted to Arambagh sub-divisional hospital for treatment.

District police superintendent Sunil Chowdhury said, investigations are on.

The CPI(M) had decided to conduct protest demonstrations and rallies across the district against the attack on the party leader.

"The former MLA was abducted and beaten up in a planned manner. Democratic structure in the state has completely collapsed," alleged Mishra.

CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose also condemned the incident.
