HC asks WB govt about its position on CBI probe on gang-rape

Calcutta High Court directed West Bengal government to inform it within 7 days about its position on plea for CBI investigation into Madhyamgram gang-rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in October.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the West Bengal government to inform it within seven days about its position on a plea for CBI investigation into the Madhyamgram gang-rape and alleged murder of a 16-year-old girl in October.
Justice Dipankar Dutta, hearing a plea for handing over the investigation to CBI by the girl`s father, also directed the state government to provide adequate security to the girl`s family.

The matter will be heard on January 15.

The father of a 16-year-old gang-rape victim, who died of burns after she was allegedly set ablaze, had filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court on January 6 seeking a CBI investigation into the matter.

In his prayer for CBI investigation, he claimed that the state police had been lackadaisical in investigating the case since October 26, when the girl was gang-raped near her residence at Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district.

Protests had rocked several parts of Kolkata over the brutal rape and death of the girl with demands for justice to the girl.
