Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court today
granted bail to four youths, who were accused of killing a
friend by pushing him into quicksand on the banks of a river
in Burdwan district.
A division bench comprising Justice Amit Talukdar and
Justice M K Chwodhury granted bail to the four who had
contended in their plea that the death was by accident and
there was no foul play.
Sukhen Dey, Uttam Somaddar, Sambhunath Majumdar and
Tanmoy Sikdar, who were alleged to have killed 19-year old
college student Debabrata Das, were granted bail by the court.
Debabrata`s father Sekhar had alleged in an FIR that
his son, after returning from college had gone to a friend`s
place, where he met the four accused on June 18 this year.
He had then gone to the banks of River Damodar near
their village Baranilpur in Burdwan accompanied by the four
Sekhar alleged that his son Debabrata had been
murdered as the four accused had pushed him into a quicksand.
Rabishankar Chatterjee and Suman Shankar Chatterjee,
counsels for the four accused, submitted before the bench that
Debabrata had fallen into the quicksand while walking around
playfully and that it was purely an accidental death.
They further submitted that the post mortem report did
not suggest any homicidal injury.
It was stated that the four, all fresh out of college
were languishing in jail since their arrest on June 20 and
that their careers were being nipped in the bud owing to a
crime that had not been committed at all.
Appearing for the state, counsel Joy Sengupta
corroborated the postem mortem report.
Hearing both the parties, the bench granted bail to
the four youths.
