Kolkata: Heavy rains lashed the metropolis
and adjoining districts on Wednesday after a day`s lull as a
flood-like situation prevailed in three districts of West
Bengal.
"Heavy rains will occur over Kolkata and neighbourhood
and all districts of Gangetic West Bengal," regional Met
director G C Debnath said here.
With the DVC releasing over 82,850 cusecs of water
since yesterday from its dams at Maithon and Panchet on the
Damodar river, there was a possibility of aggravation of the
flood-like situation in Howrah, Hooghly and Burdwan districts.
The state government was keeping touch with the Centre
in view of heavy rains and release of water from the DVC.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Centre was being
informed about the situation, and deployment of central forces
for relief and rescue operations was under consideration.
"The situation is a matter of concern. We have nothing
to do against natural calamities. But we are trying hard to
prevent floods and tackle the situation," Banerjee told
reporters here.
She also said that steps had been taken to repair
breached embankments in different places while the overall
situation was being constantly monitored.
The Chief Minister said shelter for the people and
arrangements for distribution of relief have been made in
consultation with district magistrates.
She also sanctioned Rs 88 crore for the repair of 2009
cyclone Aila-affected houses in South 24-Parganas district.
