Kolkata: A man who had lost his job recently, tried to immolate himself along with his wife and infant daughter on Tuesday before the West Bengal secretariat, Writers' Buildings, but their attempt was foiled by the police.

The 32-year-old Sanjib Pal, who lost his job after being accused of theft in a jewellery shop at Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district, along with his 19-year-old wife Shilpa and two year-old daughter waited for some time in front of B C Roy's statue in front of the secretariat, police said.

They then suddenly rushed to the high security central gate of the secretariat and tried to douse themselves with petrol, the sources said.

But, the security men present there immediately caught the three and led them away, the sources said. The Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present in the Writers' Building when the incident happened.

Commissioner of Kolkata Police R K Pachnanda said that the family resorted to the immolation bid 'due to humiliation'.

Police sources said that Sanjib was driven to desperation after his efforts to get a job failed and he decided to commit suicide along with his family.

Asked if the three would be arrested, Pachnanda said a case would be registered and he was looking into it.
