Jadavpur University VC Abhijit Chakrabati resigns after Mamata Banerjee steps in

Jadavpur University's vice chancellor Abhijit Chakrabati resigned from his post on Monday after West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee stepped in amidst protests by students demanding his resignation.

Kolkata: Jadavpur University's vice chancellor Abhijit Chakrabati resigned from his post on Monday after West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee stepped in amidst protests by students demanding his resignation.

"Vice chancellor of Jadavpur University has been asked to step down. He has forwarded his resignation letter," Banerjee announced at the varsity campus, the IANS reported.

Banerjee had asked vice chancellor Abhijit Chakrabati to step down from his post earlier today and met students on hunger strike demanding his removal.

The students and teachers were demanding Chakrabati's removal since September last year owing to a delayed reaction in the alleged molestation case of a female student.

The girl student was allegedly molested inside the campus on August 28 after ten male students dragged her into the boys hostel.

Even the West Bengal Governor TN Tripathi, who is university chancellor, had directed Chakrabati to act swiftly in the matter.

Ten students began indefinite hunger on since Jan 5 and were joined by seven others later.

Three of the 17 students were later admitted to hospital after their condition deteriorated.

Meanwhile, parents of the fasting students also joined the 12-hour token hunger strike today.
