Kolkata: Is Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha in the dock in the Saradha chit fund scam, which has “engulfed” several TMC leaders? Probably yes as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the case, has said that it will look into the role played by persons whose names figure in an SFIO report on the Saradha scandal.

In a report prepared by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) on Saradha case, Kar Purkayastha’s name figures alongside that of Madan Mitra, the West Bengal minister who is facing questioning in the case.

The SFIO mentions in chapter IV of its report, in the sub-section titled “persons liable for abetment and criminal conspiracy”, that “during the course of his deposition on oath, Kunal Ghosh (the suspended Trinamul MP) has affirmed that very high-profile personalities drawn from politics and bureaucracy were associated with the Saradha Group publicly and shared stage with Sudipta Sen. This inspired confidence in the minds of public….

“During his deposition Ghosh has submitted (a) few pictures in which Kar Purkayastha, IPS, now commissioner of police, Calcutta, and Madan Mitra, sports minister, the government of West Bengal, are seen as attending programmes organised by Saradha Group companies.”

CBI chief Ranjit Sinha had earlier this week told a Kolkata daily that the agency will follow the recommendations of the SFIO report and investigate the role played by people mentioned in the report.

Among other persons named in the report include Rajat Majumdar, ex-IPS officer and TMC vice-president and East Bengal club official Debabrata Sarkar.

Majumdar and Sarkar are already under CBI custody with Mitra believed to be next in line.
