La Martiniere decides to abide by court order
Kolkata: Hauled up by the Calcutta High
Court for not promoting a student, La Martiniere School for
Boys decided to abide by its order to promote a fourth
standard student and stood by the principal and three teachers
arrested in the Rauvanjit Rawla caning case.

"We will abide by the high court order and take
action," the school`s governing body secretary Supriyo Dhar
told newspersons about Srijan Banerjee, who was not promoted
to Class V twice for "unsatisfactory" performance.

Srijan`s father had moved the high court challenging
the school`s decision not to promote him for the second
consecutive year under the provisions of Right of Children to
Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

The school also decided to stand by principal Sunirmal
Chakraborti and three other teachers who were arrested
yesterday on charges relating to the caning of Rouvanjit, a
class VIII student who had allegedly committed suicide four
days after corporal punishment for misbehaviour in school in
