LF asks why violence taking place in Dooars?

The Left Front on Wednesday took a dig at the Mamata Banerjee government.

Kolkata: The Left Front on Wednesday took a dig at the Mamata Banerjee government saying that when it had claimed to have solved the Darjeeling issue in 17 days, why was violence taking place now.

"The problem was purportedly solved within 17 days of formation of the new government," Left Front chairman Biman Bose told newspersons here.

He was referring to a tripartite agreement signed for setting up the new hill council in Darjeeling, the Gorkha Territorial Administration.

Violence erupted in the plains in Terai and Dooars two days ago over GJM`s demand for inclusion of Gorkha dominated areas there in the jurisdiction of the GTA.

"The problem was previously in the hills, but has now come down to the plains over the GJM`s demand for inclusion of some areas of Terai, Dooars and Siliguri in the GTA area," Bose said.

"When the problem has been solved, why such a situation arises?" he asked.

"So much violence is occurring even before the report is submitted, we are apprehensive what the situation will be after the submission," the Left Front chairman said referring to the state-appointed committee which was to suggest areas in the Terai-Dooars for inclusion in the GTA. It is yet to submit its report.

"The government should sit together with all stakeholders in the region and come to a solution through negotiations to avoid further violence," Bose said.

He also urged the administration to be strict in preventing violence and the police to be neutral in tackling such situations.
