Major fire at South Asian Petrochemicals plant

Kolkata: A major fire broke out on Monday at the South Asian Petrochemicals' plant in Haldia near here, officials said.

Chairman of South Asian Petro C K Dhanuka told PTI that the raw material godown caught fire at around two pm today.

He said production at the plant, which is one of the largest manufacturers of PET resins, has been immediately stopped.

21 fire tenders have been sent to the plant site to fight the blaze, officials said.

Dhanuka said the extent of the damage was around Rs 70 to Rs 75 crore. "Everything is, however, insured."
