Malda: The unnatural death of a villager at Gajole in Malda district triggered another row on Sunday with the CPI(M) claiming that he was a farmer having commited suicide due to mounting debt.

Family sources said Dayal Chandra Burman, the villager, consumed pesticide this afternoon after failing to pay Rs 30,000 he had taken as loan some days back.

As the news of Burman's death spread, senior Bengal CPI(M) leaders Shyamal Chakraborty and Md Salim went to his native place Duhuchi and later claimed to reporters that the deceased was a small farmer who had to commit suicide after failing to get the proper price for his agriculture produce.

"The government is not acknowledging farmer's suicides also. This is unfortunate," the two leaders said.

Official sources said there was no complaint about debt-related suicide lodged by the family and circumstances behind the death could not be confirmed.

While the opposition and even coalition partner Congress claimed at least 20 farmers had commited suicide in Bengal due to mounting debt in recent months, the administration maintained the deaths had nothing to do with distress sale of paddy or debt.

Chief Minister Mamata banerjee earlier termed the farmer suicide reports baseless saying those having died had personal problems, family issues and some had even died of disease.
