Asansol: A day after West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan virtually indicted her government saying that 'goondaism' was taking place, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday asked the people 'not to spread canards or heed canards'.

"Do not spread canards nor pay heed to canards. Remain with your heads held high," Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, said at the fag end of a government function here.

"I have no family. People are my family. I will continue to serve the poor people as long as I remain alive," she said.

"We will create good people. I hope you will not believe in canards. I hope you not believe in misinformation. I hope you will not believe in guns," she said, adding that she had instructed the police commissioner of Asansol to seize arms since some people were trying to foment trouble in certain areas with the help of the coal mafia.

She, however, did not refer to the recent incidents of violence involving TMC and CPI (M), including an alleged attack on senior CPI(M) leader Rezzak Mollah in South 24 Parganas district.
