Jhargram (WB): A Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead allegedly by Maoists at Jhargram in Naxal-hit West Midnapore district, police said on Tuesday.

Five Maoist cadre shot Lalmohan Mahato (39) from close range at Chotopukhuria, when he was going to his coaching centre to give private tuition to school students, and fled on two motorbikes, they said.

Mahato died on the spot. The body bore bullet marks on the head and chest.

The police have found posters from the spot saying that "he was punished for being a member of the vigilante group called Bhairab Bahini".

Mahato was a Trinamool Congress leader of Pukhuria area.
