Purulia (WB): In a case of mistaken identity, two persons were killed and another was injured when security personnel engaged in anti-Maoist operations fired on the car in which the three were travelling here.

Police said a team of Nagaland Indian Reserve Battalion asked the car to halt at Chakbazar here last night.

When the occupants of the car, whom they mistook for Maoists, sped away, they allegedly opened fire which led to the deaths and injuries.

"This was an unfortunate incident. The local police have been asked to inquire into it. We will inform the Centre once we get the report," Home Secretary G D Gautama told newsmen in Kolkata.

SP Rajesh Yadav said Ganesh Kumar died and Asit Mitra injured but did not give any information about the body of Bikash Mitra, who was driving.

The body of Kumar was taken to the Sadar Hospital and Mitra, who was injured, was taken to the Bokaro hospital, hospital sources said.

The three were driving from Tata to Bokaro in Jharkhand.

Angry locals blocked National Highway 32 this morning in protest against the killings.
