Kolkata: In an effort to woo Muslim voters
ahead of Assembly elections, West Bengal Chief Minister
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday said that it had been his
government`s priority to provide equal opportunities to
Much before Sachar Committee, the government was aware of
the necessity to give equal opportunity to Muslims and that is
why provision was made for reservation, the chief minister
said speaking at a programme to hand over land to Al-Amin
Mission at Rajarhat in the outskirts of the city.
``It has been the intention of the government to open
up equal opportunity for Muslim children. Sachar committee
report didn`t open our eyes. We knew it much before and
therefore we provided for reservation so as to give more
opportunity to Muslim children,`` Bhatacharjee said.
Society cannot progress if a part of society is left
behind and so backward classes and Muslims had to be taken
together if comprehensive development of the state was
desired, Bhattacharjee said.
Not only the Muslims need to be educated, but they need
to be imparted quality education as well and with that end in
view he had requested the Al-Amin authority to create a
centre-for-excellence on the donated land, he said.
He praised Al-Amin`s contribution to the educational
development of Muslim community in general.
