Kolkata: In a shocking case, the naked body of a girl, who tried to save her father from being beaten up at a village kangaroo court after he failed to pay for a rented tractor, was found near the railway tracks at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday.
The victim's father, a farmer, had sought more time to make the payment for the tractor but his request was turned down by 'Salishi Sabha' (self-appointed village court) which was convened on Monday night where local Trinamool Congress councillor Namita Roy and her husband were present. The girl's father claims that she went missing immediately after protesting the diktat and assault by the Kangaroo court.
While the police said that the evidence points at a possible suicide, the girl's father alleged that she was raped and murdered. The post-mortem report is still due in the case. Two persons were initially detained in this connection, but were released later.
However, name of a local Trinamool Congress councillor among 13 others has been included in the FIR lodged by her father at the Dhupguri Police Station for "rape, murder and kidnapping".
Jalpaiguri Additional Superintendent of Police James Kujur said the Government Railway Police would probe the matter as the girl's body was found near the rail tracks.
