Kolkata: In another embarrassment to the ruling CPI-M after the Netai massacre, the joint forces arrested nine persons, all suspected supporters of the party, and seized a cache of arms and ammunition at a village in Salboni in West Midnapore district.

Some more people were detained in connection with the seizure at Masina village, West Midnapore's Additional SP (Headquarters) Sukesh Kumar Jain said.

"The arrested persons' political affiliations cannot be said for certain now pending completion of the interrogation," Jain said.

IG (CRPF) T B Rao said the forces during the search operation yesterday were fired upon by the suspected CPI-M members. The forces retaliated injuring two persons.

Fifteen guns, 61 bullets, two socket bombs and three landmines were seized, Rao said.

"All the people have been handed over to the police for interrogation," Rao said.

According to police sources, a CPI-M camp had been running at Masina village, which was once dominated by the Maoists.

The arrests came in the backdrop of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's claims that CPI-M's armed cadres had been trying for 'area domination' in troubled Lalgarh and adjacent areas in Maoist-infested West Midnapore district.
