Nun gang-rape case: Court adds criminal conspiracy charge against Ranaghat accused

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Papia Das in response to the plea of public prosecutor incorporated the section 120 B which entailed Punishment of Criminal Conspiracy.

The criminal conspiracy envisaged whoever is a party to that to commit an offense punishable with death, [imprisonment for life] or rigorous imprisonment for a term of two years or upwards.

The CID last week arrested two persons, both Bangladeshi nationals, one from West Bengal and the other from Mumbai, in connection with the heinous gang rape of the nun at a convent school in Nadia district on March 14 that caused a nation-wide outrage.

The two accused were Sikander Sheikh alias Salim picked up in Mumbai and Gopal Sarkar in Habra of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal.

Salim was produced before the court of at Ranaghat on March 27 and remanded in 14 days of police custody.

They were initially slapped charges of dacoity, gangrape, voluntarily causing hurt to a woman and gang rape among others.
